Sasthrawela viharaya


Sasthrawela is a somewhat obscure temple in the Estern province .it stretches from pottuvil to panama .History states that king Maha Datika Mahanaga built a temple called Maninaga pabbatha in this area .Ancient ruins of a great stupa can be seea all over the temple grounds.


There are indication that there  was a reclining Buddha statue in one of the caves here but the threasure thieves have destroyed similar to the  sigiriya paintings can still be seen in this cave .

There is a inscription of king Mahadatika Mahanaga here and it is to a temple called  Nakapuwatha vihara.

Accordingly ,it is definitely mentioned in the Mahavansa that this is the "Maninaga  pabbatha vivihara."
